CHAPTER 23

Callum led the way into the complex, the black leather work bag he had given me earlier that day—the same one I’d thrown at the bouncer’s feet—slung over his shoulder. Bellona, dressed in all black, looked like death’s personal assassin. She nodded me toward the entrance, a silent command. I rolled my eyes as I removed the white leather torture apparatuses called shoes, clutched them in my right hand, and strode after Callum, keeping my back straight and my head held high despite the knot forming in the pit of my stomach. I had no idea why I felt guilty, but it was there—settling deep in my abdomen and tightening around my chest like a constricting snake.

What footage was Callum asking about? Is it footage of me? Do they know I’m Resistance?

The elevator ride was long as I mentally scrolled through everything I did today, trying to find an error—a moment when I might have given myself away. The air was stale and silent, and as we strode into Callum’s apartment, even Sirius must have sensed something tense swirling around the soldiers and me because the canine rose from the couch. As soon as his gaze met Callum’s, Sirius’ ears and tail fell in apprehension, and he changed his trajectory from us to Callum’s bedroom.

Bellona closed the door behind us, pressed a few buttons on the keypad adjacent to it, and a quick gleam of blue light lined the perimeters of the whole flat before returning to normal. Casually, the Major General leaned against the door, a small smirk crawling across her lips as she looked at me. Her brows flicked up in— Warning? Expectation?

Callum whirled on me. “What, the FUCK, Adellaide?”

My heart stopped. “Um, excuse me?” I gawked at the Lieutenant General as we stood nose to nose.

“What. The. FUCK. Were. You. Thinking?” Callum enunciated every word. “Why didn’t you message me when you were leaving? Why didn’t you take a hover home? You didn’t even look at the messages I was sending you! You didn’t take my call! You ignored my every attempt to contact you!”

I couldn’t help but laugh at his audacity. He doesn’t know I’m Resistance. He is just upset that I didn’t heed him like a trained canine. “Are you seriously making this my fault? I was nearly raped, then left for nothing in the dust and dirt of an alley, and you are making this my fault?”

Callum inched closer. “I told you to take a hover.” His voice was a low, commanding rumble.

I looked him dead in the eyes. “I am not a soldier that you can just command about, Lieutenant General.”

I shoved past him. I couldn’t stand to breathe the same air as him, but Callum grabbed my wrist.

“Do not touch me!” I growled and jerked away from his grasp. “I have been assaulted enough for one night. I don’t need your hands all over me either.” A flicker of hurt flashed in his emerald eyes. Good, I thought. I wanted him to hurt.
